Physical Education (PE)
As well as being a part of our Healthy Schools programme, Physical Education (PE) is a great way for the children to stay active and gain a strong understanding of how their bodies work and the importance of exercise in their daily lives.
At Servite we try to:
- Increase participation in PE
- Raise standards in PE
- Promote a healthy lifestyle
- Enable pupils to reach high performance levels
The School Sports Premium
School Sports Premium funds every school in the country and we choose to spend our money on coaching rather than equipment. The reason for this is that once professional coaches train our teachers in how to deliver a PE lesson, we are then able to teach PE to the children ourselves- and share in the fun!
Sainsbury’s School Games
“Never let the fear of striking out, keep you from playing the game.”
- Sam Montgomery
Healthy competition teaches children to grow as sportspeople and shows them how to enjoy winning- and cope with losing! This is why our children take part in the Sainsbury’s School Games.
We regularly compete in after school leagues, competitions and festivals in a range of sports- from hockey to football and tag rugby. Taking part in the games means that we are attaining two of our goals in PE: increased participation and encouraging children to reach high performance levels.
In 2012 – 2013:
122 children took part in 9 competitions – ranking as 9th in the borough in terms of participation.
In 2013 – 2014:
290 children taking part in 18 comps – ranking as 2nd in the borough in terms of participation.
Time well spent we think!
School Games Mark
The School Games Mark is a scheme that assesses schools in their commitment to PE. Each school is awarded with either a bronze, silver or gold mark which indicates how committed they are to improving PE at their school.
We are very proud to say that we have been awarded the Sainsbury's School Games Mark Gold Award for 2015/16. This rewards schools for their commitment to and development of competition, school sport and physical education. For details on the criteria needed to qualify for the award please see the attached document. As you can see from the list, it is comprehensive and we can say as a result that our PE and school sport offering is second to none.
Extra Curricular Activities
At Servite, we encourage children to stay active outside of their PE lessons too. We do this by offering our pupils the chance to refine their skills in a competitive sport, dance away the afternoon or stay active with a range of after school clubs- from Zumba to Tae Kwando!
We are proud to offer specialist support to our children with a qualified dance teacher and football coach from Bedhead FC who come in and teach our children. It is with encouragement and leading by example that our children understand the importance of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Swimming is offered to the whole of Key Stage Two during the Summer Term.
Whether a beginner, or an expert swimmer, the children are taught how best to tackle the water- with some of them even learning how to dive!
Sport and Health Week
Although we promote healthy living all day everyday, we take the time each year to remind the children – and ourselves – how important it really is!
We have interactive workshops and presentations as well as cookery classes and sporting competitions to let the children know that a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be boring!
